AI Overviews and the shrinking click

AI Overviews now sit above organic results on a growing share of informational queries. Rankings still matter, but the click is no longer guaranteed.

What happened

AI Overviews keep spreading across Google results, but not evenly. Here's where they appear and which sources they draw on.

  • Google continues to expand AI Overviews across informational and comparison queries in the UK and US.
  • Overviews cite a small set of sources, most of which already rank in the organic top 10.
  • Commercial and transactional queries are affected far less than definitional and how-to queries.
  • Recent updates show a shift towards more diverse source attribution within the generative panel.
  • The frequency of AI Overviews appearing for logged-in users has increased compared to anonymous sessions.

Why it matters

The effect on traffic depends on what kind of question a page answers. Some pages lose clicks; others barely notice.

  • Pages built purely to answer a definition lose clicks first, because the answer is fully absorbed into the panel.
  • Being the cited source inside the panel keeps brand visibility even when the click does not happen.
  • Traffic reporting needs re-baselining: flat rankings with falling clicks is now a normal pattern, not a penalty.
  • Information gain is becoming the primary metric for maintaining visibility in the generative era.
  • Traditional SEO monitoring tools must now account for the pixel depth of organic results below the AI panel.

What to do about it

You can't stop Overviews appearing, but you can make your pages worth clicking even when one does.

  • Audit which of your pages target pure definitional intent and add depth that an Overview cannot replace: pricing, examples, tooling, local detail.
  • Restructure top pages so each H2 asks a question and the first 40 to 60 words answer it cleanly.
  • Track impressions and average position alongside clicks so you can separate visibility loss from click loss.
  • Strengthen commercial pages, where AI Overviews appear least and intent is highest.
  • Implement clear, concise summaries at the start of long-form articles to increase the likelihood of being cited in the panel.
  • Use Search Console to monitor the performance of pages that are frequently triggering AI-driven responses.
