GEO readiness: How to show up in AI answers
Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of being the source AI engines quote. Here is the readiness model we use with clients.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the discipline of becoming the cited source inside generative answers. Three things drive it: clarity of claims, density of entity signals, and presence in the engine's preferred sources. Where AEO focuses on optimising individual pages for extraction, GEO is the broader brand and source-presence game.
AEO vs GEO: the distinction that matters
AEO is page-level: structure, schema, paragraph shape. GEO is source-level: does the engine know who you are, where you exist online, and what you are credible on. A site can be AEO-perfect and still fail at GEO if the brand has no presence in the engine's training data or trusted sources.
The GEO readiness model
The steps below walk through this one stage at a time. Complete each step before continuing so nothing gets missed.
- Claim hygiene: every important claim is one sentence, factual, and easy to lift.
- Entity coverage: your brand, products, people and locations are linked and schema marked up.
- Source presence: you appear in directories, Wikipedia adjacent sources, and respected publications the engines trust.
- Freshness: pages have a recent updated date and a real changelog.
- Reciprocity: you cite primary sources so others (and engines) cite you.
Where AI engines look for sources
The details matter here. The points below separate what actually moves the needle from what is just noise.
- Wikipedia and Wikidata (the highest-trust corpus across every engine).
- Industry directories (Crunchbase, G2, Capterra, niche listings).
- Established publications in your domain (the same ones that drive backlinks).
- Reddit and Stack Exchange for expert and community signals.
- GitHub, academic and professional bodies (LinkedIn, ORCID) for Person entity strength.
Quick wins this month
Before going further, get clear on the following. Each point below covers a different part of the picture.
- Add an Organization schema with sameAs links to LinkedIn, Crunchbase, GitHub.
- Publish a stats hub with original data points engines can pull.
- Add a glossary so the engine has a stable definition source.
- Maintain an updated date on every page and respect it.
- Claim and complete your Crunchbase, G2 and industry directory profiles.
How to measure GEO progress
Classic SEO has rank tracking. GEO has citation tracking, which is messier but tractable. Run a fixed list of 30 to 50 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews monthly. Log whether your brand or domain appears, in what role (mentioned vs cited vs linked), and whether the answer is accurate. Patterns show up within 60 days.
A 90 day GEO programme
Work through these steps in order. Each one builds on the last, so resist skipping ahead even if a step feels familiar.
- Days 1-30: ship Organization, Person and Article schema across the site. Set up monthly citation tracking.
- Days 31-60: publish a stats hub plus 5 cornerstone glossary entries. Submit corrections to Wikipedia where you have a reasonable case.
- Days 61-90: pursue 5 directory listings and 3 industry publication mentions. Refresh dateModified on top-20 pages.
Common GEO mistakes
A few things are worth unpacking here. The points below cover the main ones, so read them as a set before deciding what applies to you.
- Treating GEO as keyword stuffing for AI ('mention the brand more').
- Ignoring directory and Wikipedia presence (where engines actually look).
- Skipping schema because 'it does not move rankings' (it moves entity recognition).
- Optimising for one engine: GEO needs cross-engine measurement.
Sources and further reading
This breaks down into a handful of concrete points. Work through them one by one and note any that apply to your own site.
- FrameCraft Perplexity citation audit (2026).
- Authoritas data on AI Overviews CTR impact.
- Wikidata documentation on entity references and sameAs.
- Google Search Central on Organization and Person structured data.
Questions
GEO is the broader discipline of getting cited by generative engines. AEO focuses specifically on optimising pages for extractive answer engines. They overlap heavily.
Run a fixed set of prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews on a regular schedule and log manually whether and how your brand is mentioned.
Many engines treat Wikipedia and Wikidata as high trust sources, so an accurate entry can meaningfully strengthen entity recognition, though it is not a requirement for every brand.
