ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs Google AI Overviews
AI engines do not all behave the same way. Here is how the three biggest answer surfaces differ on what gets cited.
By FrameCraft · Checked October 2026 · 3 options compared
Short answer
All three can cite your pages, but they reach them differently. Google AI Overviews draw on Google's own index, so classic SEO comes first. ChatGPT search and Perplexity use their own crawlers alongside search partners, so those crawlers must be allowed and your pages must answer questions clearly. Optimise once for clarity and crawlability, then check each engine separately.

ChatGPT
ChatGPT's search feature retrieves live web results and cites sources inline. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to find pages for search and GPTBot for model training; these are separate controls.
Strengths
- Very large audience asking research and buying questions
- Cites sources with links when it searches
- Separate crawlers let you allow search but block training
Watch out for
- Not every answer triggers a web search
- Citations change between runs of the same prompt
- Little referral data compared with Google
Perplexity
An answer engine built around search: nearly every answer cites several sources, shown prominently above or beside the text. It crawls with PerplexityBot.
Strengths
- Citations on almost every answer
- Users actively click through to sources
- Rewards clear, well-structured pages
Watch out for
- Smaller audience than Google or ChatGPT
- Strong preference for fresh, direct answers
- Blocking PerplexityBot removes you from results
Google AI Overviews
AI summaries at the top of Google results, built from Google's index. Eligibility follows normal Google Search rules: if a page is indexed and eligible for a snippet, it can appear.
Strengths
- Largest reach of the three
- No special markup or crawler needed beyond Googlebot
- Classic SEO work pays off directly
Watch out for
- Can reduce clicks on informational queries
- Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews
- Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview clicks
What usually decides it
Access comes first
Check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall settings. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from those engines' results, and bot protection sometimes blocks them without anyone noticing. AI Overviews only need Googlebot access and normal indexing.
What gets cited
Across all three, cited pages tend to answer the question directly near the top, use descriptive headings, state facts plainly and show who wrote them and when. Pages that bury the answer, or rely on images and scripts to carry content, are cited less.
Measuring it
There's no complete dashboard. Track referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in analytics, and test a fixed set of buyer prompts monthly in each engine, recording whether and how you're cited.
Which should you choose?
Choose ChatGPT if
- your buyers research with ChatGPT before shortlisting
- you want visibility in conversational research
- you can allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt
Choose Perplexity if
- your audience is research-heavy, technical or B2B
- you publish clear, factual, up-to-date content
- you want citations that drive real clicks
Choose Google AI Overviews if
- you already have or want strong Google rankings
- your topics trigger informational overviews
- you'll use snippet controls with care
Questions people ask
It's not required. Structured data helps engines understand entities and page types, but clear, indexable text that answers the question matters more.
That's a business choice about model training. Blocking GPTBot doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. Treat them separately.
Only with snippet controls such as nosnippet or max-snippet, which also affect normal results. Google-Extended doesn't apply to AI Overviews.
Google, for most businesses, because AI Overviews ride on existing rankings. Then test the prompts your buyers actually use in ChatGPT and Perplexity to see where you're missing.
How we compared
We compare tools on the criteria that decide real projects: what you can build, who can maintain it, search visibility, ownership and cost over time. Each option was checked against its official documentation in October 2026. Features and pricing change often, so confirm the details on the sources below before you commit.
