Ahrefs vs Semrush vs Sistrix
Three SEO suites we use in client work. Here is which one wins for what.
By FrameCraft · Checked October 2026 · 3 options compared
Short answer
Ahrefs is the strongest pick for backlink research and content gap work. Semrush is the broadest all-round marketing suite, including paid search and content tools. Sistrix is the most efficient for tracking visibility trends, especially in the UK and Europe. Most teams need one, not all three.

What usually decides it
Treat third-party data as estimates
All three estimate traffic and rankings from their own data. Use them for direction and comparison, and use Google Search Console for what actually happens on your own site.
Match the tool to the job
If your plan is links and content, Ahrefs. If it's a marketing team running SEO and ads, Semrush. If it's monitoring visibility and reporting change, Sistrix. Buying for features you won't use is the most common waste.
Free alternatives first
Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and PageSpeed Insights cover a lot. Small sites can often run on these, plus a monthly paid check.
Which should you choose?
Choose Ahrefs if
- links and competitor research drive your strategy
- you run content-led SEO
- you want depth over breadth
Choose Semrush if
- you manage SEO and paid search together
- you want one tool for the whole marketing team
- you need extensive client reporting
Choose Sistrix if
- you mainly need visibility trends and competitor tracking
- your markets are the UK or Europe
- you want efficient reporting for stakeholders
Questions people ask
No. Domain Rating, like Semrush's Authority Score, is a third-party estimate. Google doesn't use either.
Often none at first. Use Search Console and add a paid tool once you're actively building content or links.
Each uses its own crawl, keyword database and click models. Compare trends within one tool, not numbers across tools.
