Local SEO for service businesses: The practical version

Local search rewards a small number of things done consistently. Here is the order to do them in.

For a service business, local search is usually the highest intent traffic available. It is also one of the few areas where a small operator can outrank a national brand, because proximity and relevance count for more than domain size.

Start with the profile, not the website

The Google Business Profile drives the map pack, and the map pack sits above the organic results. Completing it properly is the highest return hour of work available to most local businesses.

  • Choose the most specific primary category available, then add secondary ones.
  • List every service individually rather than as one bundled description.
  • Add real photographs of work, staff and premises, refreshed regularly.
  • Keep opening hours accurate, including holidays.
  • Answer questions in the Q and A section yourself before someone else does.

One page per service

A single services page listing eight offerings will rank for none of them well. Give each service its own page with its own intent, its own examples, and its own pricing guidance where possible.

Area pages without the spam

Location pages work when they contain genuinely local content and fail when they are a template with the town name swapped. The test is simple: if you could replace the place name and the page would still be true, it is not a real page.

  1. Only build area pages for places you genuinely serve.
  2. Include real projects, landmarks, travel notes or local considerations.
  3. Vary the structure, do not clone one template across thirty towns.
  4. Link area pages to the relevant service pages, not just to the homepage.

Reviews and citations

This breaks down into a handful of concrete points. Work through them one by one and note any that apply to your own site.

  • Ask for a review at the moment the customer is happiest, not weeks later.
  • Reply to every review, including the negative ones, calmly and briefly.
  • Keep name, address and phone identical across every directory listing.
  • Prioritise a small number of quality directories over dozens of low value ones.
Consistency beats volume in local SEO. One accurate profile, clear service pages and steady reviews outperform any shortcut.

Questions

A service area business can hide its address but still needs a verified profile and a defined service area.

Only as many as you can fill with genuinely different, accurate content. For most businesses that is a handful, not dozens.

Review count and recency are generally understood to be a meaningful factor in map pack visibility, alongside proximity and profile completeness.
