How to get your website cited by ChatGPT

ChatGPT search picks sources it can crawl, parse and defend. Here is the practical checklist for becoming one of them.

Getting cited by ChatGPT is not a ranking problem, it is an extraction problem. The model needs to reach your page, understand what it claims, and be confident enough to attribute the claim to you. Each of those three steps has a concrete fix.

Short version: allow the crawlers, answer the question in the first 60 words under each heading, name your sources, and keep the page updated.

1. Make sure the crawler can reach you

ChatGPT search uses its own user agents. If your robots.txt blocks them, nothing else you do matters. Check for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot specifically, and confirm your pages render meaningful HTML without JavaScript execution where possible.

  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in ChatGPT search results.
  • Decide separately whether to allow GPTBot, which is used for model training.
  • Serve real content in the initial HTML response, not only after client side hydration.
  • Return correct status codes. Soft 404s confuse every crawler.

2. Structure each page for extraction

An extractable page is one where a machine can lift a single paragraph out of context and it still makes sense. That means question shaped headings, direct answers, and no dependence on the paragraph above.

  1. Turn each H2 into the question a reader would actually type.
  2. Answer it in the first 40 to 60 words underneath, with no preamble.
  3. Add the supporting detail after the answer, not before it.
  4. Avoid pronouns that refer back to earlier sections.

3. Give the model reasons to trust you

Attribution requires confidence. Named authors, visible dates, cited primary sources, and consistent entity naming all raise the odds that a model will name you rather than paraphrase you anonymously.

  • Add a named author with a real bio page and Person schema.
  • Show a published and last updated date that matches your sitemap.
  • Link out to the primary sources behind any statistic you quote.
  • Use the same brand, product and service names everywhere, including alt text.

4. Keep it current

AI search leans recent. A page last touched three years ago competes badly against one revised this quarter, even when the older page is better. Build a quarterly review into your process for the pages you most want cited.

5. Measure whether it worked

You cannot see ChatGPT rankings, so measure by sampling. Ask the same set of buyer questions monthly, record whether you are cited, and track referral traffic from chatgpt.com in your analytics as a secondary signal.

Questions

Not necessarily. GPTBot is primarily used for training. Search retrieval uses OAI-SearchBot, so blocking one does not automatically block the other.

There is no fixed timeline. Pages that already rank organically and are well structured tend to start appearing within weeks of being updated.

It is not strictly required, but accurate schema helps the model confirm what your page is about and who wrote it.
