Traffic down since AI overviews? Here is what to do
Not every drop is an AI Overviews drop. Here is how to diagnose the cause and respond without panicking.
When clicks fall while impressions hold steady, an answer surface is usually absorbing the click. That pattern is the clearest signal that AI Overviews or a featured snippet is intercepting your traffic, but it is worth ruling out the simpler explanations first.
Diagnose before you rebuild
Work through these steps in order. Each one builds on the last, so resist skipping ahead even if a step feels familiar.
- Compare impressions and clicks separately in Search Console. Flat impressions with falling clicks points to an answer surface.
- Segment by query type. Informational queries lose clicks first, commercial ones far less.
- Check for ranking loss. If positions dropped too, this is an ordinary SEO problem.
- Check for seasonality against the same period last year before concluding anything.
Which pages are most exposed
Pages answering a simple factual question are the most exposed, because the answer fits inside the overview. Pages requiring a tool, a comparison, a price, or a decision are far more resilient, because the reader still has to click to complete the task.
- High risk: definitions, short how to answers, simple statistics.
- Medium risk: listicles and general guides.
- Low risk: calculators, templates, pricing, comparisons, local and transactional pages.
The response that actually works
Do not delete the exposed pages. Change what they are for. Turn a definition post into the entry point of a deeper resource, and add something the overview cannot reproduce: a tool, a dataset, a downloadable, or first hand experience.
- Add utility to thin informational pages: a checklist, a calculator, a template.
- Consolidate near duplicate posts into one authoritative page with a clear intent.
- Shift content investment toward commercial and comparison intent.
- Optimise the exposed pages for citation instead of clicks, so you gain brand presence.
What to track from now on
Add two metrics to your reporting: click through rate by query intent, and a monthly manual sample of whether you are cited in AI answers for your priority questions. Together they tell you whether you are losing visibility or just losing clicks.
Questions
Usually not. Blocking removes you from the answer entirely, which loses the citation and the brand exposure without returning the click.
For simple informational queries, generally not. The realistic path is to shift value toward pages where the reader still needs to click.
Compare the page's impressions and clicks over time in Search Console. A steady or rising impression count with falling clicks on an informational query is the strongest indicator.
